Weekend GETAWAY Glamping in Shenandoah

I had been wanting to go to the Getaway Outpost in Shenandoah ever since I moved to D.C. and I finally checked it off my list. And let me tell you, it exceeded my expectations!

A RECAP OF OUR TRIP

On Saturday morning, we made a quick grocery run, ran through the Starbucks drive thru and hit the road for Shenandoah. It was only about an hour and a half outside of D.C. so it was the perfect weekend trip! About 30 minutes out, I started looking for a winery to stop at (trying to take advantage of being out in Virginia wine country). On the same road as the getaway outpost, we discovered Early Mountain Vineyards and it was beautiful with my ideal ambiance — like wedding venue dreams coming true! We sat by an open fireplace with floor to ceiling windows showing a gorgeous view of the mountains, and not to mention a man playing country music on his guitar… perfection.

Once we arrived to Getaway, we dropped our bags off and walked to a nearby tail in the woods, it was so peaceful! While others were staying at tiny houses in the same area, it felt like we had the site to ourselves.

As soon as we got back we made a fire, turned on an oldies country playlist and popped open a brew. We spent majority of the day and night outside by the fire (it was in the upper 40s). We even ended up eating our chili outside and topped the night off with s’mores (which Getaway supplies for you) and some intense card games.

The next morning, we had a lazy morning inside with coffee enjoying the view. I LOVE waking up to the sun so I opened the big window right when it rose and watched the natural light fill the room.

Check out was at 11AM and I definitely could have stayed another night because I was sad to go and wanted to have an early afternoon bonfire haha. We boiled water for oatmeal and used our french to make coffee.

I posted a full recap on my Instagram story the day after we came back but the entire time I was there I loved being unplugged with hardly any service. When you book, be sure to use code SHELBYJ25 for $25 off your next stay!!!

SO WHAT’S INSIDE

The cabins are basically tiny houses with a kitchenette, bathroom, shower, bedroom, and dining area. Outside of your cabin, you will have a picnic table, fire pit, and chairs.

The kitchen is fully equipped with 2 burners on the stove, mini-fridge, and a table with a bench and a chair. It even comes with basic cooking ingredients like olive oil, salt and pepper. If you forget anything or want a snack, they have a few options available for purchase as well. The cabin has a lantern, a deck of cards, dice, a radio, books, and a few other things but if you have a specific game in mind, pack it!

Growing up, my family went camping a lot, so I was used to sleeping in a tent, but glamping is MUCH better in my opinion. The large window facing the wilderness was my favorite part (there is a shade to pull down at night if leaving it up freaks you out).

WHAT TO PACK

Although I was only staying there for one night, I tried to keep my packing to a minimum with bringing two comfy outfits, tennis shoes and boots. I hardly brought any toiletries (trying to be make up free) and they have shower essentials for you. As far as food, I made chili the night before we left which was super easy to throw on the stovetop. We packed sandwiches for lunch, a small charcuterie board for a late-night snack, and then oatmeal and chicken sausage for breakfast.

We brought our food and some brews in a small cooler and transported it all to the mini fridge once we arrived. The only thing I would say is a must (for all my coffee drinkers anyways) is a French press or some way of making coffee!

______

The getaway staff did a great job communicating beforehand answering any questions I had and there is also a 24-hour text service for someone on-site if you need anything throughout your stay.

Getaway has several other campsites surrounding larger cities (Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Dallas, LA, NYC, Pittsburgh, and Portland). We absolutely loved our stay there and definitely recommend.

PS: If you are a DMV local, on the way to or from Getaway, you HAVE to stop at Old Trade Brewery. It’s on a farm only about a mile off the main road and it’s almost like you are in your grandma’s back yard with chickens running around! This may sound crazy to someone who is a city lover but I am a KY girl so I really appreciate the southern hospitality and country vibes (the views are amazing), so this was right up my alley.

As always, please please message me if you have any questions or plan to go to Getaway! I can’t wait to hear all about your trip!
